Remembering the Genocide
The 1994 genocide against the Tutsi remains one of the darkest chapters in human history.
In just 100 days, over a million innocent lives were lost, leaving Rwanda deeply scarred. In the wake of this unimaginable tragedy, Ibuka was founded, an important organization of survivors, to preserve the memory of the victims and promote healing through justice, reconciliation, and education.
The role of Ibuka
Ibuka, which means “Remember” in Kinyarwanda, plays a crucial role in ensuring that the lessons of the past are never forgotten, while supporting the well-being and dignity of survivors. Today, it represents a beacon of hope, symbolizing the resilience and unity that have guided Rwanda’s remarkable journey towards peace and recovery.
